visualization as a medium
How many years it will take before information visualization wil become as common as cinema or photography? 8? 10? 15?
I attended ETECH 2007 in San Diego. (One of the nice things about living in California is that lots of technology conferences happen just around the corner). One of the themes highlighted at ETECH 2008 was information visualization. Of course, I could only make it to some of the talks since they had many sessions in parallel - but at least among those which I went to, many featured info vis - even if a talk was not about it per ce.
Eric Rodenbeck (Stamen Design) was one of the keynote speakers:
“Information visualization is becoming more than a set of tools and technologies and techniques to understand large data sets. It is emerging as a medium in its own right, with a wide range of expressive potential.”
Stamen Design made some of the most well-known cultural visualizations to date such as Mappr. Their Cabspotting is currently at MOMA’s Design and Elastic Mind. (Yes, this is official: information visualization is shown at MOMA!).
